The Horticulture Demonstration and Research plots in Fargo are for education, research and display purposes. Current areas include the bedding plant trials; daylilies; irises; perennial ornamental grasses; Perennial Plant Association (PPA) plants of the year; a xeriscape garden and a meadow garden. A shade garden with various annuals and perennials continues to expand in a small cottonwood/pine grove. The bedding plant trial is an official display garden of All-America Selections. The daylily area is an official display garden of the American Hemerocallis Society and houses almost 2,000 cultivars of daylilies, most of which are considered historic (pre-1980 releases).
